What is Advertising?
Definition of Advertising:
Advertising is a way of diverting people’s attention away from their normal
thought process in order to capture their attention and put it on your
message. This is done for the expressed purpose of creating a favorable
impression of a product or service. This is done by extolling the positive
features of the product or service that is being advertised. Thereby stating
implicitly or explicitly that a person’s real or created wants or desires will be
met by purchasing said product or service.
We will, again, break this down.
Advertising is a way of diverting people’s attention away from their normal thought process …
This process can be anything from a paid television commercial to a free yard sign. It can be visual, spoken or in print.
in order to capture their attention and put it on your message…
We all have busy lives and it is the job of the advertiser to interrupt our lives, our thoughts, in order to attract the attention of prospective consumers. Since the advertiser has interrupted our lives, they have but a few precious seconds to attract and hold our attention in order to be able to convey their message.
This is done for the expressed purpose of creating a favorable impression of a product or service.
The advertiser must tell us about the positive aspects of the products or services. They must do it quickly as well.
To recognize a need or create a desire in the consumer.
Some products or services we need. Others we might not need them at all but, we may want them. It is the job of the advertiser to create a desire for their product or service or show how a need can be fulfilled or a problem can be solved.
This is done by extolling the positive features of the product or service that is being advertised.
The benefits of the product or service that will meet the prospective buyers needs or desires must be emphasized. The advertiser must concentrate of the benefits and not the features of the product or service.
Thereby stating implicitly or explicitly that a person’s real or created wants or desires will be met …
Some products or services are sold by implying that you will get a benefit from owning them. Like in a beer commercial, they show a guy with in crowd of friends, with a pretty girl. This implies that if you buy their beer you too will have lots of friends and a pretty girl with you. Or a lawyer commercial will say that you don’t pay if we don’t win. This is explicitly stating that he is a good attorney who will win your case or you don’t have to pay for his services.
…by purchasing said product or service.
Well, this is the ultimate goal of all advertisers. To separate us from our hard earned money. Whether or not we needed or wanted what they are selling.
What is advertising? It is the part of business where you are selling your product or service.
Marketing and advertising are two different things. They do work together to sell the products or services that are being offered. Marketing will tell you who is interested in your offering. Advertising will sell it to them.
