How long should I make my blog posts?

My blog posts, SEO, Google and engagement

blog posts

When I first got started blogging I wanted to know what to write about. That turned out to be easier than I thought it would be. I write about my own experiences, in business, as well as the experiences of others. I also write to teach the “how to’s” of running a successful business.

After that, I had the problem of not being able to write enough, on any one subject. My articles would be 300 to 400 words long. I wasn’t sure if that was long enough. I went out and did my research, only to find out that if I wanted to get a high rank on Google that I’d need to write 2,000 word articles. Oh brother! I was struggling to write 400 word articles, how would I ever be able to write 2,000 words?

The solution was to write and write some more. It seemed the more often I wrote the more details I was able to get into my articles. I went into more detail about the subjects that I was writing about and I probably average about 1,000 words per article, over the past 5 years or so. I have about 40 or maybe 50 articles that have reached the 2,000+ word threshold.

I’ve been pretty consistent with writing 750 to 1,200 word articles. I’ve been happy enough with that.

I always thought that I was doing the right thing. I was trying to rank in Google, so I was “supposed” to write longer articles.

Was I really doing the right thing?

I noticed a few things about my writing. The first thing was that I had a difficult time maintaining a schedule of writing 1,000 word articles, 25 times per month. It was taking me well over an hour to write my posts, edit them and post them. I noticed that I was able to rank fairly high in Google without writing 2,000 words. I saw that the amount of time readers were spending on my site was around 2 minutes or less. The readers were reading 1.5 pages on average. The other thing I noticed was that I wasn’t having any fun doing this.

It was around November, last year, that I got way too busy to do much of anything else except work. I ran myself ragged. Between my traditional business, my network marketing business, my blog and my 2 other businesses, I was killing myself. Something had to give!

I decided to write shorter articles. My new goal was to write more about less. I narrowed down the scope of my articles, but I went into just as much depth. The result was that I was now writing 500 to 600 word articles. They were short, sweet and to the point.

What a turn around!

blog posts take less time to write now

The shorter articles took a lot less time to write, edit and post. It takes about 30 to 40 minutes, now. I’m not as worried about ranking in Google. I’m able to write 27 or 28 articles per month. My readers are staying on my site for about 4 to 5 minutes and reading nearly 3 pages per visit. The best thing is that it’s fun again!

What does the future have in store for my blog?

I’ll continue to write shorter articles. If I happen to go over and write 750 words, then no big deal. I will write some longer articles along the way. I think that some subjects will need more time to go into the material. That’s okay, too!

Right now, this is fun and I like that!
