Should I start a business?
That’s the $64,000 question.
There are two main American dreams. The first is to own your own home. The second is to own your own business.
The thought of running your own business is very appealing to a lot of people. Being in charge. Making all the decisions. Making the big bucks! You can have the lifestyle you always dreamed about. The money and the time to spend it.
Lavish vacations. Big cars. A mansion to live in. You’d be able to send your children to the finest schools. You’d donate money to your favorite charities and help your family too. You wouldn’t want for anything.
That all sounds nice doesn’t it? It sounds to good to be true!
I, personally, know several people who have turned their small businesses into big, million dollar businesses. I know it can be done.
They are the exceptions.
Can you achieve that kind of success? I have no idea.
Should I start a business, is the question
The lifestyle sounds great but, it is difficult to achieve that level of success. Not impossible.
You need to be entrepreneurial at heart. Most people have been trained, for a lifetime, to be an employee. You are asking yourself to do things and to be responsible for things that have never been up to, just, you. You’ve had a boss to make those kinds of decisions and they take all of the responsibility for how things turned out.
It seems that more and more people are opting to be in business for themselves.
Jobs have been sent offshore. More and more people are being laid off or outright fired. They have been replaced by machines or another employee will take on their responsibilities. They will do the job of two people. Making the same amount of money of course!
It used to be a matter of growing up and getting a good education. That determined how well you did in life. Get a god job and work hard for 45 years. Then you get the gold watch and a retirement that might pay the bills. If not, you could get a job at McDonald’s or the local Walmart as a door greeter.
Many people, perhaps millions of them, are barely hanging on. They are living paycheck to paycheck. Too afraid of jumping ship and going it alone. They survive but, they never thrive. They know in their hearts, that they were meant for more. How would they make it if they left their job?
Should I start a business … maybe, maybe not
Am I trying to discourage you from trying to start a business of your own? Yes! Well, sort of.
I think everyone should, at least, give it a go but, they need to know going in, that it is much more difficult than they think.
I touched on the subject of being entrepreneurial at heart, earlier. What does that mean?
It probably means different things to different people.
I think it means that you need to be self motivated. You must have the drive and determination to keep going, when things get tough. You need to be able to make the right decisions, quickly. You must be unwavering. You must be able to wake up each morning and know what needs to get done and make sure it gets done.
This doesn’t mean that you have to do it all yourself. You can hire people to do things that you are unable to do or don’t have the time to do.
You need to have enough money to get your business up and running. You also need to be able to generate enough income to keep your business up and running. You need to be totally dedicated to achieving your goals.
You will need to be customer-centric. You need to provide a service or product that the value exceeds what the customer paid for it.
You need to know when you know enough to get things done and when you will need help. There are plenty of experts out there to help you along the way.
The most important thing that you need is a product or service that enough people will be willing to pay you for to keep you in business.
You need to do your due diligence to find out if your idea for a business is a good one or just seems like a good idea to you.
There aren’t too many things that are worse then thinking that selling frozen sloppy waffles is a good idea. Only to find out the buying public has no interest in them!
Should I start a business?
It seems to me that having a job is the risky thing, these days. Having a business of your own just might be the best thing in this type of economy!
