If you aren’t willing to talk to anyone about you opportunity or your products and if you would prefer to play it safe and stay home instead of putting yourself out there and on the line, then by all means READ this article.


There are two different methods that you can use to generate leads for your business. You can use any number of the prospecting methods or you can do advertising and marketing.


Are you a miner 49er?


That’s a reference to the 1849 gold rush in California. Those people packed up everything they owned and headed west. They were going to strike it rich. There was “gold in them thar hills!” and they were going to find it. Whether they were panning for gold or trying to dig it up out of the ground, they were there to find those gold nuggets. Unfortunately, very few people got rich this way.


The same can be said about network marketers who insist on prospecting for leads.


If you are having good luck with the prospecting method or if you think that you will have good luck talking to new people about your business, then you should continue to use or start to use it!


Having a constant source of leads is one of the most important things that you can have for your business. Even if you are one of the few who has actually gone into your warm market, eventually you will run out of people to talk to.

Most new network marketers are told to make a list of people in their warm market. When they finished talking to all of their friends, family members and co-workers they went to the local mall and used the 3 foot rule to meet people. Maybe they got tired of turning over rocks and decided to leave network marketing.


What’s wrong with prospecting?


First off it’s slow. How many people can you meet and talk to, consistently? No really, how many? Maybe 1 or 2? If you have nothing else going on, maybe you can talk to 15 to 20 people in a day.


Then on top of that, most people aren’t going to interested in owning a business. Let’s say that you are a busy beaver and you can talk to 5 people per day. There will be some days when none of them will be interested in what you have. If you are fairly lucky, you might find a few who would like to talk some more about it. Then you have to set up an appointment to give them more information. Then another meeting to see the business plan. Then you need to answer their objections and maybe by the end of that “funnel,” you might sign up someone.


This method can work and still works, to this day! I know a few people who have used this method to reach the top of their company’s pay plan.

I like to define advertising as “a way to get your message out to a lot of people all at one time.” A TV commercial is a prime example of this method. A TV commercial during the Super Bowl can reach billions of people. Even a local cable television commercial can reach thousands of people. Anyone who wants to get their message out to the public can use this method.

I like to say that marketing is a way of stay in touch with people who have made contact with you due to your advertising.


If you have ever gotten a bottle cap and entered your email address in a form on one of the soda seller’s websites, then you have responded to their advertising and when they send you their emails each week, you are then being marketed to. The emails may contain information about new products, other contests or they may send you a coupon for your next purchase of their products.


There are two main advantages to using adverting and marketing. The first is that you can advertise and reach more people in a shorter amount of time then you can with traditional prospecting. The second is that the respondent will gladly give you their contact information.


Of course, not everyone will respond to your advertising. Those that do, are prequalifying themselves. They have seen your ad so they know what you have to offer and only those that have some interest in it will contact you.


You don’t have to put a commercial on during the Super Bowl. There are lot of inexpensive ways to advertise your business. You could have flyers printed up and put them out on doors. You can use drop cards. (Read my drop card article here) You could place a classified ad in a local newspaper.

You could use online methods to bring people to you. A few of these methods would be, blogging, Facebook ads and Adwords. Blogging is cheap, but online ads can get to be expensive, so be careful!


In conclusion:


Which method sounds best to you? Going out and talking to your friends and relatives and when you run out of them, finding more people to talk to. You get to hear”No!” a lot.
