There are a lot of things that a network marketer needs to do in order to be successful in this business. This is a list of 5 of the most important things that they need do. If you’d like to add anything to this list, please put it in the comment section.

 

Long term commitment

 

Most people join network marketing thinking that it will be easy to make it to the top. They may have been told that it would be easy or maybe they watched the business presentation and figured that it would be easy to recruit 5 or 6 people. In a perfect world, it might be possible to reach the top with 6 people.

 

In the real world, a network marketer will quickly find out that they probably need to recruit 50, 100 or maybe many more people than that. They may be able to recruit 6 people in a couple of months, but to recruit 100 or more people would take years.

 

If that network marketer would like to reach the top, they must make a commitment to run their business for 3-5 years and that may not even be long enough. I’ve heard it said that most people overestimate what they can do in the short term, but they underestimate what they can do in the long term.

 

Let go of the need for approval

 

It’s human nature to want to be accepted by one’s peers and community. Most network marketers find out, quickly, that most people in their circle won’t understand why they are starting up a network marketing business. Your friends may have had a bad experience with network marketing or maybe they know someone who did. Maybe they just have some preconceived notions about the business. The network marketer will run into a lot of emotional obstacles from their family and friends. They will be ridiculed and rejected along the way.

 

Every sponsor should warn their new recruits and let them know that it’s all part of the game. That no matter what’s said to them, they mustn’t take it personally. That’s easier said than done, though.

 

A network marketer shouldn’t need to approval of others. This is a business and the business world is a rough and tumble place. Be mentally prepared for it.

Work on yourself more than you work on your business

 

Dale Calvert says that network marketing is a self development business with a compensation plan attached to it. I think that he means that a network marketer needs to work on their mindset and their skill sets, constantly. Being mentally tough and having self confidence are critical to success in this business.

 

I say that if you are working on your business between 7 and 10 hours per week, that you should be studying to improve your business skills and working on your self esteem and self image just as much as you are working in your business. Maybe even more time should be spent working on yourself and your skills.

 

Company events

 

Company events can be as small as a one on one coaching session all the way up to the national convention that your company has. It could be a team meeting, online, or it could be strategy meeting with your upline. It doesn’t matter what it is, I believe that a network marketer should attend as many of these event as they can. You get the camaraderie and the inspiration from being with a room full of like minded people. You can also learn from your fellow network marketers. Find out what’s working for them.

 

Get eyeballs on the presentation

 

This is where the rubber meets the road, in network marketing. The number of people that you get to watch your business presentation or a product demonstration will, ultimately, decide how successful you are. The number of people that you can get to watch the entire business presentation, will be determined by your skill level. If you are having problems getting people to sit down and watch it, then you need to improve some aspect of your process.

 

You can tell where you are “losing” the prospects by how many move along to the next stage of your recruiting process. I don’t know if you have a recruiting process or what it is, if you do, but when you set up the next meeting and the prospect doesn’t show up, that’s the trouble spot and you need to work through it and find a way to get them to the next stage.

 

If you can do these 5 things, you should be well on your way to success in your network marketing business.
