Our identity is who we are. Our identity is formed through our experiences, what other people tell us and what we ultimately believe about ourselves and the world around us. Our identity isn’t set in stone, but many aspects of it are difficult to change. As our belief system changes, our identity can change with it.


You may have experienced this in school. You may have taken a math class and your identity might be that you are a person who can’t do math. You are expecting to do poorly in the class. Then one day your teacher comes to you and says that they believe in you and they know that you can do well in the class. Their belief can become your belief. They’ve influenced your beliefs about yourself and you start to think that you really can do well.


This is basic human psychology. When someone presents us with a positive view of ourselves, we like to live up to that view. In our example, the teacher presented a positive view of the student and the student wanted to live up to that view by doing well in the math class.


Unfortunately, this can also work with negative views. This is the main reason why it’s a good idea to spend as little time with people who are negative as you can!


We can use this phenomenon in our network marketing business.


As a network marketer, you want people to sit down and get all of the information that they need to make an informed decision. They need to decide if the business opportunity is right for them or they need to decide if the products can solve their problems.


Unfortunately, most people have very little time or desire to sit down for any length of time to get that information. They also have their preconceived notions and they aren’t liable to give you the chance to tell your story. They are happy enough to go down their chosen path whether or not there is a different or better way available to them.


Is there a way to overcome these preconceived notions?


What if you were to give them a positive identity statement that they wanted to live up to?


If you want a friend to look at your business opportunity presentation, you might say,


I know you’re an open-minded person. Would you take a look at this and let me know what you think?”


You just told them that they’re open-minded and they’ll want to live up to that positive statement. If they say that don’t want to see what it is that you have, then they are admitting that they aren’t open-minded.

If you’ve just met a prospect you can say,


You seem like a fair-minded person. Would you take a look at this and let me know what you think?”


The same thing holds true for your products or service.


Present your prospects with a positive identity statement to live up to before you get started.


If you’re in life insurance you can say,


I know you’re someone who wants to protect your family. Would you take a look at this and let me know what you think?”


If you have an anti-aging skin cream you can say,


I know you’re a person who wants to look their best. Would you take a look at this and let me know what you think?”


You can cater this to any product or service.


You can also change what you say to someone that you’d like them to look at your business presentation, too. Whatever their problem happens to be is what you tell them.


For the person who’d like to spend more time with their family:


I know you’re someone who’d like more time with their family. Would you take a look at this and let me know if this would help you with that?”


Just make it something that fits with your prospect and what they are looking for! They’ll want to live up to how you see them.
