When you approach someone about your business opportunity, you will encounter a lot of resistance. In most cases that’s true. Occasionally, you will find someone who buys into the concept of networking marketing right from the start. Those are sometimes the best people to find. But you will find more people who have some negative feelings about MLM.
One of the most common reasons for someone to not even want to hear about your new business is, “it didn’t work for me.”
We all know people who have tried network marketing and couldn’t make any money in it. Actually, about 97% of the people who are in network marketing right now are not making money and most are losing money.
So what’s a body to do?
Your new prospect has tried MLM before and lost money. All is lost, right? Not necessarily. There is definitely a way to “save” that person.
We’ve all been there. You approach someone about your business and they ask if it’s MLM. You are reluctant to say it is, so you hem and haw about it and the person says, “I tried it a couple of times and it didn’t work for me.”
Man, I hate when that happens. Well, I used to hate it. But then I realized that these may be the easiest people to recruit.
They saw a business plan and liked the concept enough to sign on the dotted line and pay their hard earned money to join a network marketing business. The heavy lifting has already been done for you. You don’t need to teach them about network marketing. They already know what it is and liked it. You don’t need to tell them that there could be a lot of money at the end of this rainbow. That’s probably why they joined the other company. You know that they will get excited once you get them in front of your business presentation.
Come to think of it, they sound like ideal prospects, don’t they?
What do we need to do?
The one thing that you need to do is to convince them that they join the wrong person when they signed up for their last business venture.
Not that their sponsor didn’t mean well, it’s just that they didn’t have a working business plan in place, that anyone could execute.
Have you tried MLM and failed to make money?
There is a high percentage of the population that has been in an MLM at one time or another. Most don’t make money. Some even lose money. You can look at a group of your friends and you are most likely looking at several ex-MLMers. They are not hard to find!
If you want to be successful in network marketing, then you need to sign up under someone who can teach you what to do and how to do it.
If you are looking to join a new network marketing company you need to be asking about what kind of business plan, does the person who is trying to recruit you, have in place. If they can’t answer that question, you need to continue looking for someone who will help you.
If you are currently in a network marketing company, you need to find someone in your upline who has a business plan and get involved with them. If you can’t find someone, you have two choices. You can either look to join a different company or you can come up with your own business plan.
Having a business plan is how you convince someone to join you in your MLM.
When someone says that they tried network marketing and didn’t work for them, you need to ask them to describe their experience with their last company. More than likely they will tell you that they saw the plan and got excited by it. They saw that a few people working together can make a lot of money. They thought they would get help with starting their business and all they got was a memory jogger. A big list of the people they know. Their warm market. Or as I like to call it, the list of the people who are most likely to laugh at them for trying MLM.
Most of the stories you will hear will be pretty similar. They will sound a lot like the story above. You’ve probably been there and done that, too.
This is when you get to practice being empathetic. It should be easy. We all have had that kind of experience somewhere in our lives.
It might go something like this.
“I know how you feel. I’ve had that same kind of experience. You think your upline knows what to do and you expect their help to get started and they are nowhere to be found. I know how you feel. You get very frustrated. The things they ask you to do don’t work. Then what do you do? You want to build a business. You want to make this work but, you really have no one to guide you, to teach you what to do and how to do it. I get.”
They’ll be nodding their head in agreement. You are really connecting with them on a deep emotional level here. You are tapping into their anger and frustrations. You are relating similar experiences. They will feel like you know them.
This is when you tell them this.
“Let me show you what should’ve been done for you when you joined the other MLM.”
You need to have a written, step by step business plan. A nuts and bolts guide to running a successful business. Something that they can read and understand. Something that anyone can put into action, right away. You need to tell them that they are not alone in this. If they have any problems, they can call you anytime. You will be there to discuss any issues they are having and help them solve all problems.
Maybe it’s not network marketing that didn’t work for them. Maybe it was their upline.
I think you should find it much easier to get people in front of your business plan once they know that you have their best interests at heart. Once they know that you have a proven business plan in place, once they know that you will end their frustrations in business and once they know, for sure, that they will not be alone in this!
