When I signed up for my first network marketing company, I joined because I was told that I’d need to sign up 6 other people and they’d get me to $100,000 per year income. I quickly found out that it is never that easy. I can honestly say that the only reason that I’ve ever joined a network marketing company was to make big money!


Now I’m sure people join for other reasons. Right?

#6 – To learn business skills


I put this at #6, in our count down, because I’ve always heard that there are people who join network marketing to learn business skill, but I have never actually met anyone who said that’s why they joined. There are a lot of different kinds of business skills that you can learn from running this business. I’m not so sure that this is the only business that you could learn them from, but then again, another type of business would be a lot more expensive to start.


#5 – To meet people and share camaraderie

This is another reason that I’ve heard people join, but I have never met anyone who said that’s why they joined. If someone is willing to participate in the meetings, there are many chances to meet and work with a wide variety of people.


The people who are participating in the meetings are the people who joined to make money or learn new business skills. If you are in either of those categories, then you will be able to meet many like minded people.


#4 – To get their products for free


There are some people who are trying to get their products for free. This one ties into the other reasons in the top 3. The people who joined for this reason, really like the products. Either they can’t afford them or they would prefer to not pay for them. There is a way to share the products and make enough money to pay for the product that they want. Of course they would have to join the company in order to do this.


#3 – To earn extra money


These people may just want to make enough money to pay for the products that they are ordering, but they may be people who have enough time and desire to create a part time income. They may never get rich, but an extra $300.00 to $500.00 per month would make a difference in their lives.

#2 – To make a lot of money


This is the reason that I have joined all of the company’s that I have worked with. I would think that at least 50% of people, if they are honest join for this reason. Who could blame us? The presenter draws these wonderful circles on that white board and spins a yarn about fabulous riches. All we have to do is to find 6 other people who want what we want … a lot of money! I was sold!


#1 – To get a discount on products


I’ve heard numbers of up to 80% of distributors join to get the discounted price on the products. I don’t think that it is that high, but who really knows. I’m not sure it’s true, but I’ve been told that this the #1 reason why people join a network marketing company.

I think that the thought of making tons of money is the #1 reason people sign up. Most distributors lead with the business. They try to recruit first and sell products, as an after thought. This fact alone would probably mean that making a lot of money would be the #1 reason people join.


Most people have seen the business plan before they ever use a product.

Can any of this help you build your business?


If you can find distributors, in your organization, who have joined to make some extra money or to get their products for free, those are the distributors who you can work with to generate more money each month. Show them the “big picture” and help them to grow. They are one decision away from being a business builder. If nothing else, you can use this as an opportunity to spread the word and sell more products. Increasing your volume is always a good idea.


You never know if any of these new customers will turn into distributors.
