We hear the words “mental toughness” all the time, but do you really know what it means?
Wikipedia defines it like this: Mental toughness is a collection of attributes that allow a person to persevere through difficult circumstances (such as difficult training or difficult situations in games) and emerge without losing confidence.
The only place that I disagree with this definition is when they say, “difficult situations in games.” I would say that it extends to all aspects of life, not just in a game situation.
Nowhere is this more evident than when you are running a business. Running a business will try your patience and test your skills, every day!
There will be days when you are flying high. You will feel invincible, like no one can stop you. Those will be the days that you will think to yourself, “I’m going to be rich. I’m not going to go to Hawaii, I’m going to buy Hawaii!” Then there will be those days when nothing goes right. Those will be the days that will test your resolve. This will tell you how badly you really want it?
Those days could turn into weeks or even months. You may run into times that your business seems to stagnate. You get slow growth or no growth at all. Feeling like you are spinning your wheels is no fun!You may even find yourself losing ground. You feel like nothing is going your way.
You might make a mistake or someone one under might make a mistake. Either way, it is something that will need to be corrected. There will be decisions to make and tough decisions to make, too. The fate of your business may lie in the balance. I don’t mean to sound melodramatic, but a wrong decision at the wrong time can, literally, cost you hundreds or even thousands of dollars.
You can find yourself losing customers. This isn’t uncommon. Customers come and go. Every customer that you lose is money out of your pocket. Lose too many and you can be out of business.
You could lose key employees or in network marketing, you could lose good distributors. All of these things can leave you scrambling for solutions and answers. All of them can cost you money.
Running any kind of business is difficult. There will be all kinds of problems, detours and obstacles. Trying to maneuver your way through these “minefields” is not the easiest thing to do. You’ll need to be mentally tough. You’ll need to be unflappable. You need to be solutions oriented.
As you build your business you will come across all types of people and not all of them are going to be nice or supportive of what you are doing. In fact, some of them will be down right mean. They may cut you to your core. This will be the time that you may think that, “there just has to be a better way.”
They key is to develop a thick skin and a mental toughness that will see you through the tough times. It will be these two things that will make the difference between continuing and quitting your business.
