What is motivation?

What is motivation and why should you care?

what is motivation

If you have been around network marketing for any length of time, then you probably have heard many, many speeches about motivation. I know I’ve heard more than my fair share. What is motivation, anyway?

A definition of motivation would be anything that gets someone to do something.

I realize that this is not a very elegant definition, but that’s pretty much all motivation really is. There are positive motivations and then there are negative motivations as well. It is anything that makes us act.

An example of a positive motivation might be, “Get an “A” in science class and I will take you to the movies.”

An example of a negative motivation might be, “Write this report by Friday or you’re fired.”

Both of those motivational statements would get most people to take some action.

Motivation Theories

Motivational theory says that there are two types of motivation that a person can be influenced by. The first is extrinsic and the second is intrinsic.

What is extrinsic motivation?

Extrinsic motivation is motivation that comes from outside ourselves. I hate to say it, but that’s where most motivations come from. My two examples, above, are extrinsic.

Some people might hear a song that motivates them. Like the theme songs from any of the “Rocky” movies. Some will be motivated by hearing a great speaker give a lecture. Or a rags to riches story can motivate some. The “if that guy can do it then so can I” type of motivation.

What is intrinsic motivation?

Intrinsic motivation is motivation that comes from inside ourselves. Intrinsic motivation is much more rare than extrinsic. Intrinsic motivations are the kind that are, usually, the more powerful and longer lasting.

You may have heard the question, “Are you self motivated?” Another way of putting that is, “Are you a self starter?” “Can you get things done without being told what to do?”

What is motivation and which type is better?

You might say to yourself that you want to lose weight. Now, if you are losing weight because you want that certain someone to notice you and like you, then that is extrinsic motivation. If, on the other hand, you say to yourself that you want to lose weight because you want to feel better about yourself, then this is intrinsic.

If you do lose weight to get noticed, then you run the risk of gaining the weight back, if that certain someone never notices you or rejects you. That’s the downside to extrinsic motivation.

I hope that this illustrates the differences in the two types of motivation. I hope that you can see that finding the motivation from inside yourself will be much longer lasting.

What is motivation and why is it important to my business?

Those that need the extrinsic motivations to get things done are very well suited to be employees.

Those that can use intrinsic or self motivation may be better suited as someone who is self employed.

That’s not to say that someone who needs external motivations to get things done can’t be good at network marketing or any other kind of business. They just need to realize that there won’t be anyone there to tell them what needs to be done or when it needs to be done by.

That doesn’t mean that those who are self motivated are going to be good at running a business. There are specific skills that are needed to be a success in business.

what is motivation

As a network marketer, you should probably focus your efforts on finding those people who are self starters and self motivated. This would seem to give you a better chance at being successful. These types of people will take the initiative and get started quicker. That means a quicker learning curve for them and a shorter time that you will need to give them hands on training.
