Every time I turn around some network marketing guru tells me that I have to grow. I have to improve myself. They want me to read books and listen to CDs. They want me to attend company functions and events. They want me to get training and take classes. All of that costs money and a lot of it. Yes, they tell me to invest in myself. I have one question for them …


What’s wrong with me?


What’s wrong with the way I am now? They don’t even know me. How could they possibly know that I need to improve myself?


Have you ever felt like that? I know I have. I’ve been all but offended at times.


Several years ago, I got a bug up my bonnet and I called my upline. I told them that I had a problem with being told that I wasn’t good enough to build this business. They stopped me mid sentence and they said, “There’s nothing wrong with you. I want you to think about this. With your current skills and mindset, you’ve managed to get to where you are now. Do you think that with what you know now that you will get to the top of this business?”


They caught me off guard. I had to ponder that for a few minutes. While I thought about it, I was waiting for them to finish with … “Well, do you punk?”


I felt like a dog that had just been swatted on the nose with a rolled up newspaper. I had to admit that I wasn’t sure if I could reach the top at all, let alone with the skills that I had, at that moment.

They continued, “It might be possible. You could reach the top level of this business with the skills that you have now. It is possible. It’s just not likely to happen that way. Almost everyone who signs up with a network marketing company has work to do, both on themselves and on their set of skills.”


I did appreciate their blunt honesty, although I wanted to be mad at them.


When you think about it, who does self improvement? Answer: All those people who want to improve themselves and their lives. It’s rare that you’ll find someone who is reading a book about improving some aspect of their life, if they have no interest in self improvement!


Are the other people at your job reading self improvement books? There might be someone there who is reading a book, but odds are that no one is. They are happy with the status quo. They are comfortable with where they are and they really don’t want to put in the time or effort to learn anything new that could effect their lives, dramatically.


Learning new skills and improving your mindset could have lifelong effects on you and your situation. At worst, you’ll become a more valuable person and at best, this could help you to reach the top levels of your company’s pay plan!


There’s nothing wrong with you and there’s nothing wrong with where you are in life. You just need to answer the question, “Do you want to be better?” Or “Do you want your life to change?”


You should base your course of action on your answers to those questions!


It’s no wonder why network marketing has been called a self improvement business with a compensation plan attached to it!
