Have you ever wondered what the top earners really think of the rank and file members of their network marketing business? I have. If you ever get the chance to actually talk to one of them, they’ll be all smiles and tell you that you are doing a great job. Are they just blowing smoke?

 

I did get the chance to talk to the #8 money earner in one of the biggest network marketing companies in the world. The company is one of the top 20 earning companies for 2015. I spoke to him for about 10 minutes. We were in a group of people so I didn’t get to ask too many questions. He was a very nice guy. Not very helpful when it came to advice on how to build a network marketing company, but nice to talk to.

 

That was 5 years ago. Now fast forward to today.

 

I was listening to a podcast. I’ve decided not to mention this person’s name, in this article. I don’t think that they’d care, but I’d rather be safe than sorry. This person is a top, generic MLM trainer and has made millions of dollar in their career.

 

There I was listening to him when he says that he was told by 2 different top earners exactly what they thought of their downline. One said, “I have to keep them dumb and excited.” The other one said, “I want to keep them ignorant and on fire.”

 

Their rationale for feel that way about their downline was that they felt that they could get more work out of their downline. Why would they think that? The quote to explain this was, “The more they know, the less they’ll do.” Can you believe that? I was speechless.

 

When I heard that, I had to turn off my ipod. Talk about being mad … I couldn’t believe that there are people out there that think that way. I was so angry that I could hardly see straight. All they want is to keep the rank and file dumb and excited enough to go out and make them money.

 

For many years, I’ve felt like there was something going on behind the scenes. I’m not saying that it is some sort of grand conspiracy, but don’t you think that the success numbers, in network marketing, would get better over time? The more people that find success and turn around and show their downline how they can do it too, wouldn’t the numbers get better and better? Doesn’t that make sense to anyone?

 

Yet, the numbers have been pretty consistent over the past 50 years or so.

I’ve long said that if every network marketer made it to the top levels that the companies wouldn’t be able to support everyone. Either that, or eventually, you’d run out of people to recruit, as everyone in the world would be part of a network marketing company.

 

I went to a national convention when I was in Amway. I walked away from the weekend all pumped up, but I still had no idea what I was supposed to do. Now I understand why that happened. I sure was dumb and excited.

 

If you walk away from any of your company’s events and you feel all excited, but don’t really know what to do, at least you’ll know what happened!

 

I guess that every year there are a few people figure out how to make it to the top levels and that’s enough. They always say that there is plenty of room at the top. Now I have to wonder if that’s true. If it were true, why aren’t there more people at the top?

 

What do the top earners really think of us, the rank and file? Apparently, not much.
